Thanks for your interest in the Crested Butte Bank XTERRA.
If you're interested in camping, then you're in luck...Crested Butte is
surrounded by BLM and Forest Service
Land. Here’s some information
about a few areas that are close to the triathlon venue.
Primitive Camping
One option would be to camp up Brush
Creek Road. Brush
Creek Road is approximately 1.5 miles South of
Crested Butte on Highway 135. If you are headed North on Hwy 135 towards
Crested Butte, turn right at the Crested Butte Country Club sign. After 1
mile, the paved road will turn to dirt/gravel. Continue on the dirt road
until you see the Forest Service sign. At this point, anything is fair
game. The camping options are endless!
Another camping option near the triathlon venue is up Slate
River Road. To get to Slate River Road, head North on Highway 135 towards Crested Butte. You
will drive through the town of Crested Butte
and continue North on Hwy 135 towards Mt. Crested Butte. About 1 mile
North of Crested Butte, you will turn left onto Slate
River Road (dirt/gravel road). Keep driving
on this road until you see the Forest Service Sign that says "Camping
Limit 14 Days." Once you pass this sign, anything is free
game. There are some beautiful spots back here.
Designated
Campgrounds
A third camping option is a little farther from Crested
Butte, and there are a few designated camping sites. As you are
coming from Gunnison on Highway 135, you will turn right 15 miles North of Gunnison onto Cement
Creek Road. This road will turn to
dirt/gravel after one mile. After driving a couple of miles or so on dirt
road, you will see a designated campsite, Cement Creek Campground, on the
right. Cement Creek Campground can accommodate large campers. There are many other primitive camping
options up Cement Creek Road.
You really can't go wrong. Keep in mind, though; Cement
Creek Road is 15 miles South of Crested
Butte.
Another camping option would be to stay at the Lake Irwin
Campground. This campground is located 8
miles from Crested Butte up Kebler
Pass road (C.R. 12). Lake
Irwin is an amazing campground with
fantastic views. From
the town of Crested Butte, head west on Whiterock Avenue. Whiterock Avenue turns into Kebler Pass
road. Drive approximately 5 miles on Kebler Pass
road before turning right towards Lake
Irwin. Once you drive past the lake, you will see
the campground. This campground can
accommodate trailers up to 30 feet.
Showers
If you would like to shower after the event, the Crested
Butte Hostel has public showers you can use for a nominal fee. Also, the
Crested Butte Chamber of Commerce has clean public restrooms.
